NICU-Neonatal intensive care unit
We believe that babies should be born in a place where if some complication occurs it should be well equipped to handle.
Our Neonatal Unit is a 10 beds, high dependency, level 3 nursery; we have got the Giraffe incubators which are the most advanced in the world. The Neonatal Unit has facilities to care for 10 babies. We provide specialized nursery care for babies from 24 weeks gestation. Premature babies (born before 24 weeks gestation) and unwell babies are clinically assessed and cared for in the Unit until able to transfer to the Postnatal ward.
The birth of a premature or sick baby can be a crisis for the whole family, however the time a baby spends in the Neonatal Unit will be brief compared to the rest of its life and caregivers are well trained in this field to help prepare a baby for discharge.
Reasons for Admission include:
- Prematurity (24 weeks gestation or less)
- Respiratory (breathing) problems
- Infections
- Temperature instability
- Assistance with feeding
Your Babies' Caregivers
There are many people involved in the care of babies admitted to the Neonatal Unit.
The nursing team is comprised of:
- A Nurse Manager who is responsible for overall management
- A Staff Development Nurse who implements education and training
- Several clinical nurses and registered midwives who may coordinate shifts or deliver patient care
- Your baby will be in the care of a consultant paediatrician. A member of the paediatric team will visit your baby every day and is available 24 hours a day
Your paediatrician will visit you in your room to discuss the care of your baby and you are also welcome to visit the Neonatal Unit during rounds. Paediatric specialists in many fields including surgery, cardiology, nephrology, gastroenterology, genetics, pathology, radiology and ultrasound are also available if needed.
Parents are important people in a newborn's life. Your voice and gentle touch are valuable forms of comforting communication with your baby. As soon as your babies condition allows, we will support you to provide care such as feeding, nappy changing, bathing and other routines.
Your babies care may change frequently and information updates will be shared with you. Please do not hesitate to ask questions as we value and encourage your visits and participation.
