The Cradle Bangalore Commenced operation on 23rd January 2007. The First set of Babies were born on 25th January – 2007

“ If someone has chest pain and is diagnosed with cardiac problems, the care that he gets in a city such as Bangalore is not different from what he would get in New York of London, Whereas for a pregnant woman or a new born baby, the care that they get in India is at least 10 years behind schedule” Says Dr. R Kishore Kumar, CEO and Managing Director, and also the consultant Neonatalogist & Pediatrician of The Cradle Hospital, Bangalore.

With a resolve to bridge this huge gap of facilities available in India and the West, Dr. Kishore conjugated his vision with the concept of Apollo Hospitals – The Cradle- to lay the foundation of a prenatal center where top priority would be given to sage and comfortable birthing process ensuring that anxious parents-to-be leave with a healthy child. The biggest challenge was to achieve a child birth survival rate which was unheard of in India. This was mammoth task that demanded the best chil care expertise, technology and trained professionals along with thoughtful implementation of the core ideas and values.

Vision embraces dream

Of course a woman is never alone during her pregnancy. Longing to touch those tiny hands and tender feet, she is always surrounded with that fear of the unknown coming with the child birth. Surely, it isn’t for nothing that stretch marks are considered the pregnancy service stripes for a woman, underlining the courage that a woman needs and the pain she has to bear. Add to this the fact that half a million women lose their lives across the world during pregnancy.

In India, Metarnal Mortality Rate of 301 per 100,000 live births*, is one of the highest in the world as  compared to nations like, UK(10) and neighboring countries like Srilanka(60), China (60). Similarly, Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) in India is 56 per1000 live births against 2.80 in Japan and 2.76 in Sweden.

It was against this backdrop, that Dr. R. Kishore Kumar, a well known neonatalogist, decided to come back to his home land, after having served for 19 years in 4 continents including USA, UK and Australia. One of the youngest & the highest qualified neonatologists in the world and felicitated by the former US president bill Clinton, Dr. Kishore had only one dream “Setting up a perinatal center of international standards where mothers-to-be will get world class medical attention along with luxury and comfort of a home to ensure that the baby will have a smooth transition from the safety of the womb to the outside world.”

3Cs – Care, Comfort & Celebration

“Pregnancy is the only time when you go to the hospital in wellness and not in sickness. To celebrate the birth of a child you need to be in a place where there is no typical smell of hospitals, no smell of medicine and no one crying in the next room because he has cancer of renal failure.” Says Dr. Kishore.

A human touch, some words of encouragement, congenial atmosphere combined with the right care can make a huge difference with the way a woman takes the whole birthing process. To become a mother is one of life’s greatest blessings. It is a lifelong event that forver changes a woman. This is where The Cradle has made a difference. Tiniest details have been kept in mind while designing the home-like rooms for the mothers and mothers-to-be. The rooms are tastefully furnished with all the necessary facilities like telephone, refrigerator, multi-channel music and a large screen cable programmed TV, which will make any mother feel

instantly at home. The staff has been trained to immediately acquire the role of a family member providing personal care and affection.

Combined with this personal care was the thought to provide maximum comfort to the would-be-mothers. This culminated into the facility of all-in-one labour, Delivery and Recovery rooms for the first time in Bangalore.

The LDR room provides mothers-to-be a home-like atmosphere and it is by courtesy of LDR that, the expectant mother is no longer required to be bundled from one room to another and can experience an uninterrupted birth process. Each LDR is furnished with an imported multipurpose bed and all the equipment necessary for a safe and comfortable delivery.

Unifying clinical expertise with technology

In a country where more than 50 infants in a 1000 do not survive their first month, dreaming of a Zero Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) rate was but naturally ridiculed. However, the passion of a perfectionist, that Dr. Kishore is, made sure that The Cradle, Bangalore achieved IMR of near ZERO PERCENT. The message at The Cradle is very clear--- If the cost of an error is human life, then eliminates the possibility of any error by constant monitoring, use of the latest technology and trained professionals. This has translated into a phenomenal success in the care for unwell and premature babies requiring constant observation.

Technology in birthing process

Having served in 4 continents for 19 years Dr. Kishore was well aware of the role that latest technology can play in achieving the near zero IMR & MMR. From fetal monitoring to the 4-dimensional ultrasound, photo therapy to incubators, advanced technology backed by trained professionals is essential at every stage of the birthing process. Since so much depends upon the accuracy of the results of these machines, choosing the best in the field was the natural choice. And with its wide dealer network and superior after sales service GE became the obvious choice.

Dr. Kishore recalls,” A premature baby delivered only in the 30th weeks was diagnosed with Tracheoesophageal fistula i.e. the baby had no food pipe and the food pipe was connected to wind pipe. Anywhere in the world, 90% of such babies would have become statistics. But at The Cradle, the baby was operated within 6hrs of birth and subsequently went home healthy after a 7-week stay. In another case a baby was born weighing just 680 gms with placenta less than the size of an idli.

This baby survived the ordeal of premature birth because of the advanced intensive care which included use of the giraffe incubator. I can tell you 10 success stories about premature babies and all this could not have happened without appropriate technology support.”

Latest Technology

For a busy birthing center like The Cradle, Where 1600 babies have been delivered in the last 19 months, uninterrupted service is vital. It is here that LogiBook Ultrasound machine, which is of the size of a laptop, comes into play during emergencies and nights providing the patients with the extra comfort of staying in their room while they are being scanned.

Phototherapy sessions are required for infants born with hyperbilirubinemia (jaundice).
While most of hospitals separate mother and the infant for the same, Bill blanket/The Lullaby

Phototherapy system at The Cradle save the mother and newly born from this trauma of separation and provides phototherapy while the new born is held and if required breast-fed by the mother. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology like Giraffe Incubator, Neonatal intensive Care Unit of The Cradle takes care of each and every need of unwell or premature newborn infants. First hour of the birth being the golden hour as far as survival of these infants is concerned, nothing less than the best would work here.

According to Dr. Kishore CEO & Managing Director of The Cradle, “Giraffe is the World’s best incubator. With a combination of open and close care system Giraffe becomes a simulated womb for the new born. The best part is that it caters to all the requirements of a growing premature baby. And it is this integration of technological edge, with the expertise of our clinicians that has led to this huge success of The Cradle.”

Moving ahead with future growth plans

One thing that is constant at The Cradle is the fervour to improve and grow. Others who tread the same path failed, for lacked the passion of this Cradle family in Bangalore.

The journey has just begun. Plans are afloat to create 20 more such Cradles to give a life time of wonderful memories to the would-be mothers and healthy start in life to the youngest citizens of India.
